OSR-Tan Art Challenge

The OS-Tan Crew
Okay, this idea is weird, but bear with me here.  You may have heard of OS-Tan.  Its a bizarre Japanese meme in which various versions of operating systems and programs are anthropomorphized into distinct characters, typically cute anime girls.  I was thinking - why couldn't the same thing be done for various gaming systems as well?  After all, the OSR already has an association with hot elf chicks.

So, what we need are two things for the OSR-Tan Art Challenge.  First, we need a distinct description of a mascot, for a particular version of a role playing game, like Holes D&D, 2nd Edition Advanced D&D, Metamorphosis Alpha, or Synnibarr.  Then we need someone to draw that description.  Anyone who wants to, really - it doesn't matter.    The more the merrier.  If you have your own RPG, come up with a description yourself and draw it even!

This would be an ongoing, eternal challenge - open until the end of time.  No losers, only winners.  :)

So, anyone interested?  Write a description in the comments.  Post a link to your own drawings.  Whatever.  I would be more than happy to tackle some of the art - I just don't have any really good descriptions in mind.

Have fun!

- Ark

P.S. - Don't complain if the mascot for your favorite RPG comes out as something you hate.  Your input is VITAL to the process. :)

  1. This could be fun. Although you do know you shouldn't anthropomorphise inanimate objects, right? They hate it when you do that. ;)

Odin (OD&D): mysterious, enigmatic, gnomic. His words can only be understood in connection with other documents. Loves cryptic crosswords.

Ronnie (AD&D 1E): a grouchy long-bearded eremite with burning eyes (picture Alan Moore) sat on a wind-swept column. Obsessed with timekeeping. Descends only occasionally to perform some unbelievable act of physical fortitude that reminds all the other OSR-tans that they ain't *that* hardcore.

Holmes (Holmes, natch): quiet stay-at-home type. Others think he lacks ambition, but he's happy to tend his own garden of unearthly delights.

??? (B/X): Gregarious, popular, great fun to be around. Used to be in a popular band that toured the world.

Becky (BECMI): Fun-loving ditzy younger system^W sister of Holmes and (B/X). Loves working with kids, but is occasionally subject to insane "A God Am I!" power fantasies.

Twoey (AD&D 2E): red-headed stepchild of the family. Tries hard, too hard.

    1. @Chris - Yes! That's exactly the kind of write-ups I'm looking for. And the more, the merrier.

I'm thinking B/X should be Bixie. Well, Bixie-tan, to complete the whole 'tan' mystique.

Funny - yesterday I was trying to imagine Holmes-tan and Bixie-tan - and I cam up with them being sisters. Holmes-tan was the older, more serious sister, dressed up like a cliched librarian with her hair in a bun wielding a yard-stick, while Bixie-tan was her younger, more simple sister, dressed like a farmer in overalls, a straw hat, and a stand of hay 'tween her teeth. :) Holmes-tan would be in all blue, Bixie-tan in blue and red, while the even younger sister (whose name apparently now is Becky-tan) would be in either all red - or all the BECMI colors (that I can't remember right now off the top of my head.)

      Love Becky-tan's delusion's of god-hood there. :)

      Thanks!

  2. It certainly is a clever idea. But I'll admit I never "got" the OS-tan thing. Cute, entertaining, but I have nothing to add to it.

    1. @Timothy - That's okay. I don't know that I ever 'got' the OS-tan thing either. Well, other than it's something to do for fun - if you are that way inclined.

  3. As an animist, I fully support this endeavor. Chris Hogan up there seems to have it mostly well in hand, though. "Obsessed with timekeeping." Awesome!

Twoey should perhaps be a world traveler, loving new locations. But perhaps a little too tightly-wrapped to really let loose when s/he gets there.

    1. Oh, and despite being so tight-assed, Twoey might nevertheless be scattered and absent-minded, with so much to keep track of. Kinda like the professor in the "She Blinded Me With Science" video, maybe.
