Traveller Skill Matrix

Below is a skill matrix for the current characters in the Traveller campaign - in the same format as I had set up in the past for Stars Without Number.

There are a lot more skills in Traveller, though, creating quite a list.  That has it's positives and negatives.  But since, typically, the player does not have to agonize over which skills to pick - they come out pretty randomly in character creation - it's not too bad.

  1. Neat! I like the idea of tracking this although it could get annoying as they improve their skills over time (I would likely lose track of someone somewhere).

    1. BA - Thanks. This isn't really intended on being a living document. It's intended as a snapshot for analysis and a tool in adventure design. I don't have the kind of attention span or drive it would take to make adjustments often. :)

Not that I will be needing to make adjustments often. I think I am going to get into exactly why in the replies to the comments below . . .

  2. As far as length goes, why list any skill that no character currently has?

    1. th - It's not intended to be just a catalog of character skills. It's an analysis tool. Skills without representation are equally, if not more, important that skills that the characters have points in.

With the matrix, I can see what types of adventures a party will excel at, and plan accordingly. I can also see what types of adventures they would be horrible at. If they found themselves on such an adventure, they'd need to hire others to help, or do some HEAVY improvising.

For instance, with their excellent skills in Broker, Carouse, Deception, and Streetwise, they can breeze through social interactions and life in populous, civilized planets. With their lack of skills in Animals, Life Science, Navigation, Physical Science, Space Science, and Survival, however, they are ill-equipped to do exploration work. And if they ever crashed their ship on an uninhabited planet - I think they'd end up eating each other. :)

  4. How do you handle skill advancement? I find the Mongoose version to be too damn slow, and so use a modified version of the Adventure Tally system from Megatraveller.

    1. Erin - Conversely, I find the Mongoose version too damn fast in the realm of skill advancement. :)

When I got MongTrav, I didn't know it had any type of skill advancement. CT didn't have one, so I assumed MongTrav did not. I wrote in a blog entry saying that, while I would like to play Traveller, I didn't think the players were up to it, because they had never been in a game where there was no way of getting better at something.

The idea was that, without an advancement system, the players (especially a couple in the group) would stop meta gaming and actually get into their character's heads if they weren't worried about advancement mechanics all the time. They took the bait, and decided to give it a shot.

Then I found the advancement system in MongTrav. It didn't give me me any warm and fuzzy feelings. To me, it's too fast. Think about how a career works. Except for your first term, you stand to get, on average, 1 to 4 levels in a skill per term. A single point represents at least a year or so's real world experience and training.

And we start off with the characters in their RETIREMENT YEARS. As an Old Fuck(tm), I know that my ability to learn new things has reduced drastically compared to my hey-days as a young learning punk.

Look at it another way. If Medic-2 is equal to being a doctor (per the book,) why should that only take a couple of months to achieve? that's a - what - 8 to 12 year career path in real life?

I've seen that some people seem to only play to make their character better. Some even seem reticent to ever actually use the skills they gain in the game itself too. It's like they are collecting baubles. I'm really interested in shifting away from that sort of, for lack of a better term, 'video game' mentality, and have players play PEOPLE, rather than a bag of NUMBERS.

I do see a need for skill advancement. I mean, people, even old ones, do occasionally learn something. I haven't decided yet, but if I was being generous, I'd say characters could gain 1 level a year. but I'd probably go with less - I just haven't thought up a mechanic that makes me warm and fuzzy yet.

That's not to say that your method isn't perfectly valid. It is, of course. It's your way. :)
