Twinkie Doodle

We went to the animal shelter recently and came back with two rescue cats.  One stayed still long enough for me to draw her.  The Boy named her Twinkie because she is the color of a Twinkie.  But she also goes by Twinker Bell, Stinker Belle, and Hey You Damn Cat.

The other cat, Heidi, hides a lot.  She was pretty feral when they picked her up and is just now learning to play.  String is a big favorite of hers.

So this marks the end of the first month of the A-Doodle-A-Day project.  I'm sure that many of you are tired of being spammed by crappy pictures in your blog-rolls.  I originally set the goal to post a doodle ever day for a year.  It's harder than I had originally thought.  A big pain in the ass.  And the hand.  And exhausting.  So, with that in mind, I've decided to . . . oh hell.  I'll keep on doing it.  I enjoy drawing too much.  In fact, I'm going to make it even more difficult for myself.

How? you may ask.

Well, lemme tell you . . .

I recently noticed that d20 Dark Ages is holding the D&D 40th Anniversary Blog Hop Challenge in February.  It's one of those write a blog post ever day for a month about something kinda things that I've avoided my entire blogging career.  I'm enjoying my own, self-inflicted year-long challenge with the doodles, but I've been worried it's been a bit . . . random . . . in subject matter.

So, in my ultimate wisdom I decided to participate in the Blog Hop, AND to do a doodle along the same subject as that day's particular blog topic.

What could go wrong????

Finished Pony Doodle

Yay!  I finished the present for my niece Erin.  Acrylic on bristol board in a wooden frame.  It kind of looks like finger a finger painting - but I tried.  :)

My Little Doodle

I'm working on an idea for that Pony Loving Erin.  No, not THAT Pony Loving Erin, but my niece Erin, who is also a Pony Lover, and who is also named Erin.  Small world, eh? ;)

Zen Head Doodle

I know this may not seem like much, but to me, it is.  This is a sketch done with no reference - completely from my mind - and it's structure ain't too bad and - well - it looks pretty much like I pictured it.  That whole MIND-TO-PAPER direct transfer thing has eluded me for decades.  I draw stuff, sure, but I'm usually trying to copy what I see, or I draw something from my head, but it turns out to be something I didn't quite imagine.  This one is different.  He's got that whole three dimensional thing that I've been striving for.  I'm getting there, slowly but surely - and I'm smiling just like he is. :)

Yearly Game Porn Snaps

It's that time again!  What follows is my post-moving-purge game collection.  Minus a whole wad of minis, a HALO Hero Clix collection, and the DICE BINS.

Panties Doodle

I ran out of the blue lead I use for sketching and had a heck of a time re-adjusting to regular graphite.  I must have drawn crap for 7 hours today until this popped out.  Well, maybe I was a bit harsh on the other stuff - but man, I just felt bad drawing it.  This one I felt a bit better.

Mata Hari Doodle

I never could make out what she's wearing in her hair - in the original photo - so I improvised. :)

Cockblocked by William Golding

Less than a month ago, I moved to a college town.  It has two major universities, and a plethora of smaller ones lurking about.  While officially within the borders of the local megalopolis, It's far enough away and small enough to have that small town, homey feel.

The town has a used book store.  I'm not talking about a Half Price Books.  I'm talking about a real, two story, jammed packed, dusty smelling, windy-aisled (wind as in brook or stream, not blowing air,) creaky stairway, well-nooked, up and down floored for no apparent reason, utterly lovely used book store.  Last night was my first foray into the place.  I had a couple of minutes between going to one place and needing to be at another place, so I thought I'd pop in.

Instantly completely lost in the wonderousness of it all.  If there was an RPG section, I couldn't find it, and wasn't too unhappy.  Tons of everything you'd expect from a town with more college students than horses. (And there are a lot of frigging horses in the region.)

So I'm halfway between the sci-fi section and the literature section when this very cute woman comes up to me, a embarrassed look on her face.

"Hi," she said, crinkling her brow, "Can you, um, do you happen to know who the author of the Lord of the Rings is?"

My eyes lit up.  How I would regale her with my bottomless knowledge of Tolkien!    Oh, how I would tell her of the many differences between the movies and books.  How I would discuss the fact that there were 13 Dwarves in the Hobbit novel, and there were 13 chapters, and how that wasn't a coincidence!  How I would sing to her the Song of Durin over a candlelit dinner!

She lightly smacked the center of her forehead and twisted her lips.  "Lord of the Flies.  Duh.  I meant Lord of the Flies.  Who wrote it?"

I blinked a couple of times.  I had read it.  I high school.  Like a billion years ago.  I even wrote a report on it.  Uh . . .

"I don't know," I sighed, "All I remember is they killed Piggy."

FUCK.

"Sorry, spoilers."

Sister Doodle

It's Aludra - Ines' (Spacey Doodle) sister.  I find it hard to know where and how to exagerate cartoon figure - like them hips!

Orion Doodle

Well, this was supposed to have been a simple doodle.  I drew an Orion slave girl.  But - you couldn't tell she was green from the sketch.  So I had to color her.  You understand, right?  It was important.

Oh, and she might also be She-Hulk.  Orion She-Hulk.  Yeah.  that's it.

Spacey Doodle

I've had the idea for Ines in my head for a while, but now I finally had the impetuous to draw her.  Been scared of the whole 'creating a toon' thing.  Yay for daily forced drawing!

A Doodle A Day

Okay, in the spirit of A Mantra for 2014, I am initiating A-Doodle-A-Day, in which I will post something arty each day for the year.  It may suck, but I'm working on VOLUME here.

Above is the icy chick from Frozen.  I haven't seen it yet.  Heck, I haven't even see Hobbit 2: Electric Boogaloo yet.  Been busy. :)

Wish me luck!

A Mantra for 2014

“Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn't have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I've ever met. It’s gonna take awhile. It’s normal to take awhile. You've just gotta fight your way through.”

"Just keep swimming. Just keep swimming. Just keep swimming swimming, swimming, swimming."
