Limehouse Chinatown

Our upcoming GURPS noir horror game - The Directorate of Esoteric Affairs - will kick off in 1933 in London's old Chinatown.  The first installment will be 50 point characters, followed by 100 point characters two years later in 1935.  Then, the characters will move to 150 pointers in 1937, where we will progress at a more normal time/xp flow.  I'm trying to ease the characters into GURPS, and give them a tour of the possibilities.

London’s original Chinatown was located in the East End, in an area known as Limehouse near the River Thames.  Primarily inhabited by Chinese sailors and those who serviced them, records indicate that there were never more than several hundred inhabitants at any given time.  Despite that, legend populated Chinatown with an ocean of Yellow Peril, wall-to-wall opium dens, and the nefarious Dr. Fu Manchu - bent on world domination.

My Limehouse Chinatown is a mix of both - a real neighborhood full of hard working immigrants - plus a dark underbelly of unknown terrors.  And heck, yeah, some Big Trouble in Little China too.

But I'm ditching the whole Yellow Peril thing.  Besides, I'm sure the Directorate of Esoteric Affairs will have a lot more trouble on their hands, what with werewolf invasions, Aleister Crowley, and Cthullu's return to deal with.

Below are some period images to help set the mood . . .

I'm Like A Million Years Old Today

Erin Palette was razzing me about not posting in like, forever.  So in an effort to make her wrong, here is a post!

The above was taken during my 44th birthday dinner tonight at Saltgrass Steakhouse.  I kilt a cow and eated it.  But before that, I got presentses, my precious.  Whatever could that be, clutched in my hand?  No, wrong hand.  That is The Boy.  Other hand.  Yes.  Could be . . . an RPG book?

Duh.

I'm not a big fan of bloggers posting apologies for not keeping up with blogging, so no apologies here.  It will happen when it happens.  Meanwhile, I've been drawing up a storm, I'm running a Kids Star Wars bounty hunter campaign, I'm playing a psychotic assassin the Tephra steampunk game, and I just wrapped up an epic Big Kids Star Wars game that went on for almost half a year where they murdered the hell out of Darth Vader yesterday, minutes before the credits rolled.

So what's it's got in its grubby little hands, precious?  Well, yet another GURPS book.  Yup.  I'm about to run a mega epic campaign called Esoteric Affairs - which I see as something like Men In Black, but done in the black and white London of the 1930s with monsters replacing aliens.  A Noir Horror Mystery Thriller kinda thing.

Should be fun.

Now please excuse me as I waddle to a place I can lie down on and moan for a while.  Eating a whole cow can be painful . . .

Barbarella - Queen of the Galaxy

Okay - the colors are done.  Funny - for months now I've been almost exclusively working on figure drawing fundamentals - and somehow my coloring seems to have gotten better.  Odd. I'll never figure out this art thing. :)

Accidental Art

I still am confused as to why most of the things I intend to draw end up as beg nasty meses, while the mindless sketches I make tend to be the ones I like.  Probably says something aboout my psychological make-up. :)

Cartographic Question

This map for my Star Wars players brought up a question from one of them.  Where is the land and where is the water?

So, what do you see?

Edge of the Empire Dark Side Slide Mechanics

In last night's Star Wars game, the PCs woke up and ancient Sith Lord who handed them their asses and walked over their bloody, crumpled  bodies as if they didn't exist.  (This wasn't the kids game - it's the, um, BIG kids game.)  Anyway, three of the PC's decided that they needed some force powers of their own and that reviving an ancient Sith Lord and having him suck the life out of you and then chop off your limbs and gouge out your eyes was the perfect 'trigger' for your latent force abilities to show up.

So they all bought themselves some force abilities.  Now the force abilities in Edge of the Empire are very pedestrian - convincing some strormtroopers that those are not the droids they are looking, tossing someone across the room, and reading someone's surface thought.  No 50 meter leaps or force lightning.  This is a Han/Boba style game.  The Force book won't be out for a long, long while.

But still - the game has a mechanic for dark and light sides, and using them.  Basically, you roll and could get some dark or light points to use, or some of both, for whatever power you are activating.  You can spend light and dark with little issue.  But Edge of the Empire is vague about the whole good/bad thing - except to day that maybe the GM should do something about it if he or she feels like it.

I felt like doing something about it.  In my opinion, the dark side is nothing to treat lightly - even if you are a murder hobo.  So I drew up a rough draft:
Characters may convert a number of dark side results into force points each session with no harm.  This number is equal to their Willpower + Discipline (between 1 and 12 with an average of 2.)  Past that, the character runs the risk of loosing control for a period of time, if not permanently.  This loss of control is up to the GM, but will involve the dark side emotions of fear, anger and hate.

When converting force points above their limit, characters must pass a Discipline check to stay in control of themselves.  If they fail, they loose control to the Dark Side (and GM) for 1 round plus another round for each Threat in the dice pool.  Times outside of combat would be minutes, not rounds.

A despair results hands over control to the DM for the rest of the combat (or encounter.)

Each failure PERMANENTLY increases the difficulty of the roll, from Simple, Easy, Average, etc. - thus adding another difficulty die to the Discipline check.  Past Formidable (five dice) there is the Impossible Task level, which also has five dice, but requires spending a Destiny point to attempt.  Failure of this Impossible Level Task makes the character an NPC for the GM to control permanently.

This mechanic is designed to allow the players to flirt with the dark side a bit. They can even train themselves to be able to dip into it more. But if the character goes beyond 'recreational use' and becomes a dark side addict, then some horrible things will happen. Not just to the character, but everyone around them.

Jedi Temple Younglings anyone?

Tephra the RPG

I'll say this upfront.  Tephra is everything that Shadowrun Fifth Edition should have been - a science-fantasy role playing game with technical marvels, demi-humans, and a simple game mechanic.

I avoided this game for a long time, despite it being available at my FLGS, despite my friends playing it, and despite even the fact that the game designers came from half a state away to run a demo game four blocks  from where I live.  Tephra is steampunk.  I did steampunk way back in SPACE: 1889, and didn't have much interest in diving back in.

Well, last weekend a game of All Flesh Must Be Eaten fell through due to involuntary DM double-shift, so us stragglers sat around debating what to play.  The local Tephra evangelist was there, so I said 'What the heck' and we played a game.

Character creation can be a bit overwhelming at first, as there are no classes, or templates, or nothing.  It's best just to have an idea for the character, and then have someone who knows what they are doing help build it.  But after I had made a character once, I think I could make just about anything now.

Kalisandra the Satyr
aka the Encylopedia
(due to a few well-rolled knowledge checks)
So, Tephra takes place in a fantasy world gone steampunk.  Races include humans, the aquatic ayodin, gnomes, fallen elves that are more like trolls, and 'fixed' elves called the farishtaa.  There are also satyrs.  I've never once thought about playing a satyr in any role playing game before, but I found their background intriguing - being a genetically modified slave race recently freed, so I chose one for my character.

There are five attributes; Brawl, Cunning, Science, Dexterity, and Spirit.  Each of the attributes have a variety of skills - and you put your points into the skills - not the attributes.  Then you select some specialties that are under the skills you bought.  Attribute scores are derived from the skills, and not the other way round.  This method of creation lets you pinpoint exactly what you do well, and everything else falls from that.  Specialties range anywhere from driving with your knees, building steam power robots, to paralyzing people with your touch.

The game mechanics center around a twelve-sided die.  One twelve-sided die.  That's all you roll.  It explodes out the top for larger numbers, and you add your attribute or skill.  Usually it is a contested roll with the biggest result winning.  Very simple and quick.  I like it.

Of course, there is a lot more to it.  There are many background options and the skills and specialties systems really help to make your character into an individual.  My satyr character is a spy and assassin who bullshits her way out of trouble, strikes with her octopus-hilted daggers around people's armor, and if all else fails, can craft her own poisons - delivered by little mechanical octopi -  to finish people off.

Throw all of this into the world of Tephra, a setting designed to support many shades of Steampunk - from Victorian England, Wild West, Colonian Africa, or the Far East - and you get a really nifty game.  It has resparked my interest in steampunk - a genre that I never really thought I'd be interested in again.

So yeah, I'd recommend it. :)

Shadowrun the Fifth

Soooo . . . the guys have playing that new Shadowrun video game and are hungry for some Shadowrun role play.  I wasn't real happy with 4th edition.  Don't get me wrong - I love love love the Shadowrun universe.  But the mechanics were a pain in the ass.  Fifth is coming out - and they have some Quick Start Rules up for it, so I said what the heck, I'll run it for them - most have never played before - and we'll see if it is worthy.

I haven't finished reading the QSR yet and I'm already . . . gritting my teeth.  Despite a rules overhaul, it still looks like we are tossing around anywhere between ten to twenty six-sided dice bombs for offensive actions AND defense of said actions.  Not my favorite part of the game.

To top it off, the intro adventure . . . geez . . . where to begin.  Okay, so obviously the guy who wrote  the thing and the guy who drew the map for the adventure didn't talk.  The map - and it's a map of a fast food restaurant - doesn't match of with the descriptions.  Heck, if the map had even a vague resemblance to a fast food joint, that would help.  But it doesn't.  Why is the food prep area in the middle of the frikkin room like a Benihana?  Surely a Shadowrun McDonald's would NEVER want the customers to know what they are actually eating?  And the bathrooms are big enough to store school buses in.  Arrrghhh!

(Deep breaths, deep breaths.  Relax, Ark.)

So, I'm trying to stop myself from going out and dropping 200 bucks on GURPS books and tweak it's knobs until I can run Shadowrun RIGHT.  Okay, I don't' have 200 bucks, so that fixes that.

But I'll run the QSR alright, dammit.  And we'll see how it goes.  Who knows - maybe I'm over-reacting and everyone will love it.  :)

Petty Landscapes

Three or four months ago, I had an idea to draw weird landscapes for Gorgonmilk to use, should he need them, as filler inside of the Petty Gods book.  Layout can be a bitch, and strange shaped art could only help, right?  Well, then I burnt out my hand drawing too much in an unhealthy way, and a strange, artistic malaise/depression set in as I healed.

Well, my hand hurts a heck of a lot less and I gave the old Wacom a twirl tonight.  Whatdayya know - I finished one of the Landscapes I had sketched out a while back.  Yay me!

Anyway, here it is - Petty Landscape #1 (aka First Date.)  Use is as you wish, Gorgonmilk!

Okay, now some ice for the hand . . . :)

Antipode System

Below is the star system that The Boy and I worked on during vacation for the Star Wars game:

"Details are sketchy in the galactic databases on the Antipode system.  It was a member of the Old Republic, settled by a mix of sentient races.  Due to a nearby supernova approximately 1,000 years ago, the hyperlanes connecting Antipode to the rest of the galaxy shifted, causing it to be unreachable.  During last days of the Clone Wars, CIS scouts detected a large hyperlane shift and rediscovered Antipode.  The last official records indicate that at the close of the Clone Wars, the Antipode system was absorbed into the Galactic Empire as an Imperial Species Preservation Zone with extremely limited civilian access."

This should be interesting, as it will be the core setting of an Edge of the Empire campaign. :)

Star Wars for Kids Only

The guys get serious as they plan to steal a freighter.
I've been wanting to run a kids only game for a while.  Before vacation I talked to the owner of the FLGS and she helped me set one up.  Last night we had our first game.

My son and two other boys played. Neither of the two other boys had played a role playing game and were a bit apprehensive, but they knew it was Star Wars, so they were willing to give it a go.

I'm amazed how a strange movie I fell in love with 36 years ago can still hold the attention of young and old alike.  Rather than overwhelm them with the 450 page rulebook, we played the Star Wars: Edge of the Empire - Beginner Game.  I had some issues with the beginner game earlier - but those all melted away as I saw the completely fresh gamers dive right in.

They seemed to really like the pregen character packets - especially after I told them that the character's names and genders were flexible - they could change them how they liked. Well, no one picked the droid doctor - so maybe he has a different target audience.

It fascinates me how quickly people pick up the funky proprietary Star Wars dice.  Within a couple of rolls they had it down and were chugging along, determining their successes and advantages with ease.  While they took to playing very quickly, they couldn't convince any NPC of anything, blowing their social type rolls catastrophically.  So they brute-forced their way along, bashing heads and making a general nuisance of themselves.  In other words, they behaved like seasoned RPG veterans.

I had great fun running the game, and to hear "when can we play next?" is just one of those things that money just can't buy.  In following games, I'll bring out the big book and let them rework their characters with the advanced rules.

It went really well. Most issues were minor - such as frustrations brought on by failed rolls.  The biggest problem with the game came to the fore as one of the boys asked "Can I play a Jedi?"  Yeah.  There are no Jedi in the Beginner Game.  There are no real Jedi in the Edge of Empire game at all, for that matter.  There are force sensitives - proto-Jedi perhaps - but they are expensive point-wise and rather ineffective at low levels.  Which is the way I like it.  But, you know, it's something iconic to Star Wars - especially those who grew up on the prequels - and seems like a gaping hole that will take two years to fill.

I explained the reasoning behind the missing Jedi, and that he could play a Jedi in training if he wanted too.  When we concluded the game and I told them about customizing their characters with the advanced rules, I asked the boy if he wanted to make the character a Jedi.

"No," he said, "I think I'd like an assassin better.  He wears all black and sneaks around.  He needs a jet-pack too.  I'm going to go home and draw him.  Is that okay?"

"Um, yeah, sure. That's just fine," I smiled.  Perfect, actually.

World Building While on Vacation

First Catch of the Day (and last)
When I was young, we didn't get to go on vacations much - aside from spending Christmas or summer with one grandmother or another.  Many of my teenage years were spent on the flat, dry desert of West Texas, drawing maps of lush, forested mountain valley in which to set my D&D adventures.  I had a hard time grokking what these landscapes would actually look like, so I made contour maps of the imaginary regions and made slices of the maps to show the elevations.  Yeah, I was that kid.

Much of my idea about what wilderness looked like came from the land around my grandmother's house, which was a mixture of ranch land and wild areas full of pecan trees about 30 miles south of Cross Plains, Texas.  Those were Robert E. Howard's stomping grounds, so at least I was in good company.  But still, I didn't see a mountain until I was 17 on a trip to El Paso.  The meager 23 mile long Franklin Mountain chain inspired an entirely new continent in which to set fantasy rpgs.  Later, trips to Cancun and regional Texas lakes helped to form the Sea of Tears campaign, a world I designed made entirely out of small island chains - the peaks of mountains left dry after an aquatic cataclysm.

Attempting to Draw Palo Duro
This year we headed up to the Colorado via the Texas Panhandle and New Mexico.  The Boy wanted to see the Palo Duro Canyon, the second largest canyon in the United States.  I was impressed.  When you first drive up on it and get out of the car - well - my head started hurting.  It is such a big hole in the ground that my brain could not comprehend it.  There is no really good mental vantage point to attach anything to.  You just have to stare at it long enough to realize that those tiny green bushes down there against the orange and red rocks are actually trees three time bigger than you are.  Palo Duro really needs to be in one of my worlds - somewhere.

It wasn't my first time through New Mexico, but it was The Boy's, and it was great fun to watch his expression as the bumps in the land grew bigger and bigger.  "Is that a mountain?"  "No, not yet."  "Is THAT one a mountain?"  "Nope."  Eventually we got to a point where he didn't have to ask.  The stark, empty terrain had me thinking a lot about Cowboys and Indians.  Well, until I was jarred awake at the Dhillon Truck Stop in San Jon, New Mexico, a Punjabi buffet serving up chana masala, tarka daal, and a variety of curries.  Life is funny like that.  I wish I could come up with things half as amusing as that in my games.

Colorado was just breathtaking.  (Really.  The air is pretty thin up there.)  I had never been up so far in the Rockies.  We went up to the mythical town of 'South Park,' (which more or less actually exists,) and said 'wow' a lot at the scenery.  At one point, we went to the Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine tour, where they take you 1,000 feet underground.  I learned a lot about dungeoneering there.

First off, it's really, really hard to dig through basalt and granite.  Black powder was used before the advent of dynamite to blast through the rock.  And it is dark down there.  The guide showed the differences in lighting techniques over the ages, and a candle just does not cut it.  Yes, they mined by candlelight.  I, however, cannot see a very successfully melee against goblins happening that way.  And swinging a sword in a 10x10 corridor?  Yeah, right.  however, surviving an AD&D fireball was probably a lot easier than Gygax lets on - because the miners used to do it every day.  They were just all deaf afterwards and, on average, had 15 years to live. :)

While up in the the thin air, the boy and I sat down and worked on a planet for the Star Wars game.  It's a football shaped planet, either end having great big mountains.  The equator is all pretty much ocean with some islands.  The north pole points directly to the system's star, leaving the other pole constantly frozen.  He's great at naming things, so we fleshed out the entire solar system and he named everything we could think to name.  The planet itself, Antipode, should be a great place for adventure - maybe even as much as Colorado on summer vacation.

Fanboy

I've been staring a lot at Carrie Fisher circa 1977 lately.  My art style has been all over the place in my sketches for the past two or so months and I've been somewhat frustrated that nothing that I draw looks even vaguely like how I intended it to look.

So, I've been sitting down with the good princess and sketching her over and over again with the idea that maybe if my style won't calm down, perhaps I could draw at least one iconic person in a halfway similar manner semi-consistently.

Not so much. :)

Oh well.  But while practicing and icing my hand when it hurts, I have come to the conclusion that I probably am a Princess Leia fanboy and just never realized it. :)

Breathing Blogs

On to a happier note compared to yesterday's post - here is my list of BLOGS ACTIVE IN 2013.

Admittedly, some of these blogs have statements that they are shutting down, but at least they made the SHUT DOWN statement in 2013. :)

Here is my meager attempt to categorize them so far:

  • Art (68) - These are blogs where art by the author is published by the author.  There are some gaming blogs in here, but with these, I get the vibe that the art is more important than the game.
  • Gaming (46) - These blogs are gaming blogs that expand well beyond Old School, or don't have an old School vibe at all.
  • Miniatures (21) - Lead porn - pure and simple.
  • Nerd/Geek (34) - Kitchen sink nerdery.
  • Old School (298) - These are blogs that I get a heavy Old School vibe from, even if the topic of the post is 'Cheeses from Around the World.'

Again, these are blogs in my reader list, not a comprehensive list of blogs out there.  I'll be working to widgetize the fresh list over to the right one day - soon hopefully.  If you know of a blog that I should be looking at, please let me know.

Oh, and feel free to browse below. :)
